Fishing Conditions

Catch and release
Gateway Canyons Resort
Many fishing opportunities are in Gateway and the surrounding area. On the Gateway Canyons Resort property is currently one pond with over 400 rainbows. (see the Outfitters for details and catch and release regulations)
West Creek
This is a fragile little creek that currently has a 2 trout limit. However, we strongly encourage catch and release fishing here. The fishing can be fantastic but challenging. Please ensure that your waders, clothing and shoes have all be sanitized as this is a whirling disease free stream.
The last time this section was stocked was 25 years ago and it currently holds 7 rainbows for every 3 browns caught. Average size is 10-12 inches. Best fishing is when the water is clear. Early spring (before runoff) and mid summer through November are great times to fish. Dry flies work year round, however I have found that nymphing can be more productive and single flies work better than 2-3. Full chest waders are recommended as some of the holes are quite deep (in the cooler times of the year).
Dolores River
Carp, catfish and suckers inhabit the stretch of Dolores that flows through Gateway. Some large channel catfish have been taken (under 5 pounds), but most are 1 1/2 pounds to 2 pounds. Flyfishing for carp on a dry fly is a lot of fun as the carp is one of the best fighting fish in North America. Stories of carp over 10 pounds are common, but the proof is tougher to get than a story!
San Miguel River
Above the confluence of the Dolores and the San Miguel (45 minutes south of Gateway), and up into Telluride, the San Miguel offers exciting trout fishing. In the winter months the trout will move down out of the ice choked canyons all the way to Uravan and back upstream as the water begins to warm up. When the water is low, stealth is paramount.
Big Creek Reservoir
How about a nice drive to a beautiful reservoir? 1 hour (plus) and you are there fishing a reservoir ranging from 50 feet deep near the dam when it is full to shallow flats. It is possible to catch some huge trout in this lake as it has an abundance of some of the largest crayfish in the state! Rent a jeep from Gateway Canyons and even if you don't catch much, the drive will blow you away!
Hidden Lake
Thanks to our friend Wally Winfield, this lake has been discovered. Wally recently passed away but told stories of catching a lot of fish and fast. In 45 mins (plus) you can be there casting away. A 4WD is recommended when the weather is bad. However, when the road is dry a 2wd car can make it. The views if the La Sal Mountains are worthy of the front page of any book! Bring your camera. Boats without motors are allowed. Check Utah's regulations for updates. A Utah fishing license is required (available online). http://wildlife.utah.gov/index.php
